Golds Galore for Sutton Athletes in the County Championships – 13/14 May

It was a golden day for many of the Royal Sutton Coldfield athletes who attended the Warwickshire County Track and Field Championships at Nuneaton.

Charlotte Hey U15 1500m County Champion

Fifteen County titles were won by Sutton athletes last weekend including one in the Staffordshire Championships. The haul of medals included fifteen golds, two silvers and two bronzes. Two of the throwers attained English Schools’ qualifying distances, notably Megan Sharman with a personal best of 36.90m in the Hammer and Jasmine Walker who threw 34.97m in the javelin, breaking the County Championship record by over 6 metres. The fact that the club is becoming much stronger in the throwing competitions was evidenced by gold medals for under-13 Ethan Cook in the discus and for under-17 James Ward who won double gold in the discus and hammer. In addition, Elsa Buchanan threw a personal best of 21.36m in the javelin. In the senior women, Chrissie Prince remarkably won triple silver medals in the hammer, shot and discus with Sheri Smart gaining bronze in the discus.

Jasmine Walker U15 Javelin County Champion

The sprints were dominated by two impressive athletes. Up and coming under-13 star Isobel Male blew away the opposition in the 100m (13.04s) and the 200m (26.85s) and the senior men’s events were dominated by Kane Howitt who won the sprint double with the stunning times of 10.72s and 21.48s in the 100m and 200m respectively. Not to be outdone, Shem Nelson took the 400m in a time of 52.26s. There was also a personal best of 11.7s for under-17 Cameron Harris in the 100m.

Under-13 girl Sian Duval became the 800m Staffordshire champion by beating off some strong opposition with a very respectable 2m-33.7s. Her brother under-17 Lewis Duval also ran a personal best time of 4m-31.3s in the 1500m. Rising star Charlotte Prince won the 800m in a time of 2m-39.3s to become Warwickshire champion and she also took silver with a strong race in the 1500m event. Under-15 Charlotte Hey won gold in a blistering 1500m race against very strong opposition in a personal best time of 4m-57.2s. On the previous day Charlotte also took bronze with a personal best of 2m-26.4s plus she achieved personal bests in the javelin and long jump. In the U20 men’s 3000m steeplechase, there was a clear victory for Alex Blackham with a time of 10m-50.6s. Other notable performances came from Frederic Tremblay, 4th in the senior men’s 800m, and Tom Chew, also 4th in the 1500m,  running a Personal Best in the process.

Other personal bests were achieved by Caitlin White (1500m), Martha Wood (800m), Lucy Carey (1500m), Zara Buchanan (1500m) and Hannah Smith in the hammer. The U11 boy’s Quadkids competition was dominated by winner Harrison North. His performances included a club record of 29.12m in the ‘Howler’ throw and a time of 10.8s in the 75m.

Records galore at inaugural club champs

Harrison, Fraser Ethan finalOn a beautiful sunny Saturday the inaugural RSCAC Club Championships took place at Wyndley Stadium with athletes in age groups U11, U13, U15, U17 and U20 competing across a wide range of track and field events.  Competition was fierce with every event being closely contested. For many of the younger athletes this was their first taste of competition under UKA rules and thanks to a great effort from the parents, officials, helpers and athletes everything went smoothly and a great atmosphere was created.
There were some superb results with a total of 145 Personal Bests and 7 Club Records set so it’s fair to say that there were many proud athletes, parents and coaches by the end of the day.
New Club Record’s were set as follows: U11 Boys Howler Fraser Cook 27.52 metres, U11 Boys 75 metres Harrison North 10.8 seconds, U11 Boys 150 metres Harrison North 21.4 seconds, U11 Girls 1200 metres Lucy Rigby 5.29.3 seconds, U13 Girls 75 metres Isabel Male 10.0 seconds, U13 Girls 150 metres Isabel Male 19.7 seconds and Finally U15 Girls Hammer Meghan Sharman 34.41 metres. So the sprint double by both Isabel and Harrison were major highlights.
No doubt this event will now enter the annual event calendar for next year onwards

Fantastic triathlon debut for Isobel Millington

Here’s a report from Graham about a great debut for Isobel Millington in the triathlon:Isobel Millington 1

Yesterday Royal Sutton Coldfield U15 athlete Isobel Millington competed in her first Triathlon in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. She has been training hard for the event and that training paid off. She finished 8th overall, 2nd women home and 1st in her age group, a great debut. Coach Graham Felton said that he was extremely proud of her achievement and it shows her strength of character, she is a very good sprinter/thrower and this has required a whole new mind set and a totally different training regime. It shows that if you want to try something different and are prepared to put in the hard work required you can be successful. Well done Izzy!

ERRA National Road Relays – 8 March

There were good team results at the National Road Relays in Sutton Park on Saturday, which confirmed the improvement all-round for the club at the Road relays in recent years.
Compared to the Midlands Relays, conditions were not optimal for the runners, very sunny with warm temperature over 20 degrees Celsius, but great for spectators.

The women’s team finished in 30th position out of 46 finishing teams.

Results here.

The men’s team finished in 51st position out of 63 finishing teams, its 2nd best finish in the last 5 years.
Shaun Evans ran a great first leg to place the team in 29th position, with a time of 27:51.
Alex Jones ran the quickest short leg in 17:17.
There were also strong runs from Oliver Harradence (28:43) and Paul Terleski (18:43).
Other runners in the team were Rob Andrews, Dave Long, Thomas Chew, Stephen Pitt, Colin McAuley, Trevor Lewis, Mark Rickards and Fred Tremblay.
A few runners used the relays as preparation for the London Marathon, we wish them good luck !

A few words from the Senior Men’s team manager Steve Marklew
“Can I take this opportunity to thank ALL runners who competed in the Midland & / or the National events, particularly those who came in at short notice to cover withdrawals or were willing to swap leg times / from short to long legs etc.  Such willingness makes the life of team manager slightly easier when having to change things around.”

Well done to everyone who competed, all runners are grateful for our supporters to the tune of “Come On Sutton” around the local course.
