Young Athletes

RSCAC Young Athletes

We have an active and successful junior section with over 150 members who compete in all athletic disciplines. Over the years we have had many athletes who have represented the county and region and a number who have gone on to receive national honours.
We provide the opportunity for youngsters to get a taste of athletics from the age of 7. We have a term time introductory group for 7-9 year olds on Thursday evenings (between 5pm and 6pm) at Wyndley Athletics Track. The emphasis of these sessions is to provide a fun introduction to athletics. Children do not need to be members of the club to participate. The group is very popular and there is currently a long waiting list in place so you please email us before coming down at
All other groups (i.e. for children from aged 9 upwards, or from school year 5) are catered for in our main sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6 and 8pm. We also have specific groups that meet at other times. We have a jumps and hurdles group (for children aged 9 upwards) that meets 6.30pm – 8pm on Friday evenings, and we have a number of other groups (in particular distance running groups) that meet on Sunday mornings.
We train throughout the year and meet at the clubhouse on Wyndley Lane (between the athletics track and the duck pond). We train on the athletics track and in Sutton Park during the summer months. During winter a number of our groups also train on the footpaths on some of the quiet residential streets near Wyndley.
Athletes in the under 11 age group have the choice to start in either the sprint or distance group. Much of the initial focus is on developing fitness and speed through running. However, we also provide the opportunity for young athletes to experience field events such as long jump, high jump and throws.
As a child progresses through the age groups, they will be put into specific training groups relevant to their interest and abilities. We cater for all athletics disciplines  – sprints, distance running, jumps, throws, hurdles and pole vault.
Training sessions cost £2.00 for junior athletes. We are happy for new athletes to come and try our training sessions before joining the club. Further details of our membership fees and benefits are available on our join us page.
We expect our athletes to compete for the club and gain experience of competitive athletics. We have an all year round programme of athletics competition, with traditional athletics taking part in summer and indoor sportshall and cross country competitions taking place in winter.
In summer we have junior teams that compete in the Heart of England League (U11s upwards) and the Youth Development League (U13s upwards).
In winter we have an active and successful cross country team who compete in the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League and in the county, regional and national championships. The West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League comprises five races against all the top athletics clubs in the West Midlands. We have a successful record in the league having won it 14 times in the last 17 years. The races are for 2 year age groups from Under 11 upwards. (Under 11 is school Year 5 and 6, Under 13 is school Year 7 and 8 etc.). Further information is available on the WMYACCL website.

We also compete in the major county, regional and national events. These are open to athletes from the Under 13 age group upwards.

We also compete in the Birmingham Indoor Sportshall League, which is a fun indoor league of sprints, numerous relays, jumps and throws. All Sportshall fixtures take place at The North Solihull Leisure Centre, Conway Road, Chelmsley Wood, with the age groups being Under 11s, Under 13s and Under 15s. For this Sportshall League, the Under 11 age group is school Years 5 and 6, Under 13 age group is school Years 7 and 8 and Under 15 age group is school Years 9 and 10. Further details are also available on the Birmingham Sportshall website.
