Young Athletes

We have an active and successful junior section with over 150 members who compete in all athletic disciplines. Over the years we have had many athletes who have represented the county and region and a number who have gone on to receive national honours.

Training
We provide the opportunity for youngsters to get a taste of athletics from the age of 7. We have a term time introductory group for 7-9 year olds on Thursday evenings (between 5pm and 6pm) at Wyndley Athletics Track. The emphasis of these sessions is to provide a fun introduction to athletics. Children do not need to be members of the club to participate. The group is very popular and there is often a waiting list in place so you may wish to email us before coming down at rscac@hotmail.co.uk
All other groups (i.e. for children from aged 9 upwards, or from school year 5) are catered for in our main sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6 and 8pm. We also have specific groups that meet at other times. We have a jumps and hurdles group (for children aged 9 upwards) that meets at 5.30pm on Friday evenings, and we have a number of other groups (in particular distance running groups) that meet on Sunday mornings.
We train throughout the year and meet at the clubhouse on Wyndley Lane (between the athletics track and the duck pond). We train on the athletics track and in Sutton Park during the summer months. During winter a number of our groups also train on the footpaths on some of the quiet residential streets near Wyndley.

Athletes in the under 11 age group have the choice to start in either the sprint or distance group. Much of the initial focus is on developing fitness and speed through running. However, we also provide the opportunity for young athletes to experience field events such as long jump, high jump and throws.
As a child progresses through the age groups, they will be put into specific training groups relevant to their interest and abilities. We cater for all athletics disciplines  – sprints, distance running, jumps, throws, hurdles and pole vault.
Training sessions cost £2.00 for junior athletes. We are happy for new athletes to come and try our training sessions before joining the club. Further details of our membership fees and benefits are available on our join us page.
