Midland Championships – 30 January
There were some great performances at the Midland Championship at the weekend. Here’s Margaret’s report:
“The Midland Championships were held at a new venue, Prestwold Hall, Leicestershire, on Saturday. On a deceptively tough course, Royal Sutton Coldfield AC was well represented and there were some exciting performances.
In form Shaun Evans, had the best result of the day in the Under 20 men’s event. Always in contention he tracked the leaders until half way and ran on strongly to be rewarded with a bronze medal. He was also celebrating selection to race for Midland Counties in the Home Countries International which will be staged in Falkirk in March. Jerome Austin battled well in 26th place.
The club’s sole representative in the Under 17 women’s race, Georgia Curry, had a great championships crossing the finish in 7th position.
The Under 17 men packed well with Alex Jones impressing in 14th, Alex Blackham ran a determined race in 33rd and Tom Parkes completed the scoring with a strong run in 46th.
Under 15 Ellen Humpherston put in a mature performance to finish in 17th in her event.
The senior women put in a strong team performance to finish 7th overall, with Andrea Deathridge 32nd, Mel Woodward 40th, Lizzie Wignall 53rd and Rachel Thebridge 108th. For the senior men the first runner home for the club was Tom Chew in 60th place.”

RSCAC Men made a hard push for promotion, in the penultimate race of the season, by achieving 2nd place on the day, at Gloucester on Saturday.
With the recent onslaught of rain and with temperatures getting close to freezing levels, the course was always going to be very challenging for all participants, although it was shorter and flatter than in previous races.
The team managed to place 3 runners in the top 20 for the first time this season.

Shaun Evans gained victory for the first time in the Senior Men’s league, following on from his win at the U20M Cross Country County Championships last week.
Ollie Harradence finished strongly in 9th, and Tom Chew a great 17th. Both also sit in the Top 20 scorers overall in the league after 3 races.
Closing the march for “Team A” was the always improving Jerome Austin (36), Dave Long (59) and Steve Marklew (82).
All other runners managed to get vital points over our closest rivals, with Simon Corker (110), Chris Taylor returning to good form (119), Jon Higgins (129), Paul Terleski (135), Russell Simpson in a sliding performance (141), Fred Tremblay (144), Steve Semple (155), John Fletcher (177), Simon Hall (190), Matthew Powel (200), Paul Jenkins (203), Matthew Stenson (205), John Alcock (219).
All results from the race are here.
The team now stands in 4th place after 3 races, 39 points away from 3rd spot synonymous with promotion.

For the men’s team, the last race is at the same location on the 13th Feb, and promises to be a great fight.
