Daniel Mills wins medals at Special Olympics

Daniel_with_medalsWell done to Daniel Mills who won four medals at the Special Olympics at Alexander Stadium on Sunday. Daniel, who is trained by Graham Felton, competed in the 100m, 200m and Long Jump where he achieved pb’s and 3 Bronze Medals. He then won a Gold Medal in the 4 x 100m Relay. What makes this all the more remarkable is that Daniel is an U11 and was competing in the open age group against adults and much bigger and older athletes.

Road Race Review

Mark Rickards getting tips off one of the locals after the GNR

A number of athletes have been out on the roads over the past couple of weeks. We had four runners make the long journey to Newcastle to run the Great North Run. Rob Andrew and Mark Rickards both completed the course in 1:24, Matt Stenson ran a PB of 1:29:28 and Dan Musson ran 2:42.

Jon Higgins ran a 40 second PB in the Cardiff 10k completing the course in 36.41. Jon has made great improvements since joining in the Spring and will be a useful addition to our Road Race and XC teams.

The ever consistent Russell Simpson ran 1:19 at the Kenilworth Half Marathon to finish 9th.

At Lichfield 10k Andrea Deathridge returned to distance running after a summer of pole vaulting to finish as 2nd women.

Well done everyone!!!

John’s report on the Veterans Cup Final – 31 August

Hi Everyone!

Please find the below results of the League Cup Finals at Stoke yesterday. Our small team of Andrea, Sandra, Fiona, Lorna, Richard, Graham, Paul, Ed, David, Kevin and yours truly put in some great performances with quite a few pbs and two new club records from Graham. We ended up in third place in the C Cup Final although a few of the performances would have won the A Final and several would have finished in the first three.

Ed competed in 5 events which he says is good preparation for the British Masters Decathlon which he competes in at Alexander Stadium on Sept 20/21st for which we all wish him a great competition. We will all be cheering for you!

It was great to see Sandra competing again after 2 years absence.

Paul had us all shouting out for him in the Combined Finals M40 1500m . Fifteen meters down from the first two at the bell he went storming past them at 200 meters and just kept going away from them. What a run! I am told it compares to my lead off leg of the 4x100m relay. Seriously it was great to be running again.

Kevins victory in the M35 Discus was an inspiration to us all as he has two slipped discs and today is in hospital for a procedure to ease the problem. Very shortly Kevin moves into the M50 age group when the Discus drops down to 1.5Kg. New club records beckon.

Grahams club M65 records are
  • High Jump 1.10m (replacing Jhalmans 1.04 set in 2004)
  • Hammer (5kg) 23.27m ( replacing his record of 22.73 set earlier this year)
Well done Graham!
On the final day of the European Championships Fred T got a silver medal as a member of the second placed French M35 4x400m relay team (you can see a picture of Fred with the team on the club Twitter page) and Donald B added a bronze to his three silvers as part of the M45 British 4x100m relay team (a drop down in age groups for Donald) . Well done Fred and Donald!!!
In talking with David Price yesterday I realised that I had missed his M70 throws with the 500 gram javelin for club record purposes since in a very few of Davids competitions he is able to throw the correct javelin for his age. We therefore have a new M70 club record: David Price M70 Javelin (500g) 33.32 m (2010). A belated well done David!

European Masters update

WOW. What great performances from our guys in Izmir!!! Donald Brown took his third silver of the Championships by finishing second in the M50 200m Final in 24.28 secs. He already won silver medals in the 100m and 100m hurdles.
 Rob Andrew Izmir
Current British champion Rob Andrew also took the silver medal in the M50 800m Final in 2.05.58. You can see the video of the final here.

Fred Tremblay narrowly missed out on a medal finishing in 4th place in the M35 800m Final in 1.58.77. Video of the final here.
However, he won a silver medal today competing for France’s 4x400m relay team.

Great running guys!!!

A fantastic day for our senior athletics team!

Nicholas PWow – What a result!!! A fantastic team performance saw the senior athletics team win the final fixture of the season.

The star performance of the day came from Nicholas Pryce who broke his own club record in the 100m with a time of 10.6, won his 200m and 400m races, recorded a 30m javelin throw and finished the day off with superb legs in the relays. What a day!!!

Kane Howitt scored stacks of points in the sprints and jumps, Lana Partridge and Megan McBrien dominated the middle distance races, whilst our throwers (Kevin Brown, Connor Notley, Graham Felton, Chrissie Prince, Lorna Foster and Fiona Smith) were all superb. In particular, Chrissie recorded fantastic wins in the shot putt and discus. Special mention also to Vici Richardson who ran a great 3k to win us 5 points only a few days after completing a 24 hour endurance race.

There were club records for Andrea Deathridge (W40 400m hurdles – 84.6), Fiona Smith (W50 Women Hammer (4Kg) – 25.72m), Graham Felton (M65 Hammer (7.26 Kg) – 18.81m) and Nick Corker (M35 3k steeplechase 10.01.8).

In summary, everyone contributed hugely with many people competing in multiple events and others competing in new events (both on Saturday and throughout the season). A fantastic team effort – Well done everyone!!!

1500mThanks as always to our officials and supporters who braved the at times apocalyptic conditions. As always your efforts are greatly appreciated!!!

And finally thanks to John T and Fiona S for all their support and efforts through the season as Team Managers.

Look out for a report in this weeks Observer.
