Deepest Sympathy to the family of Gordon Chapman

The Club regret to announce the death of Gordon Chapman, who was a loyal and active member of Royal Sutton Coldfield Athletics Club both as a competitor and latterly as a Club Coach. He and his wife Beryl, who had recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary were long standing members and competed in race walking events gaining valuable points for their club, particularly in the mid week Vets Track and Field League. He was extremely competitive and rumoured to have a stop watch in his pocket, whether competing or walking to the shops.

On competition days the Chapmans were always down at the club, with Gordon down on the track working whilst Beryl could be found in the club kitchen preparing food for all the officials.

Prior to turning his attention to athletics, Gordon was a keen cyclist for Birchfield Cycle Club and would think nothing of riding for 60 miles on any one day. He maintained his interest in the sport of cycling by watching the televised Tour de France, Giro d’ Italia or the Spanish Vuelta every year.

Words like ‘enthusiastic athlete’, ‘valuable club member’, have been used to describe Gordon during his association with the Club.

During his competitive years at the club he held a total of 9 club records – some achievement!

He will be sadly missed.

Sportshall Success

Last Sunday, 19/3, U13 & U15 boys’ and girls’ teams from Birmingham, Herefordshire & Worcestershire, Shropshire and Warkwickshire competed in the West Midlands Regional Sportshall Finals at North Solihull Sports Centre.

After some great performances in 3 earlier club meets, RSCAC athletes were selected for all 4 Birmingham teams. At U13 in squads of 12,  Evie Edwards, Florence Kinson, Isabel Russon, Jayden Bailey and Archie & Oliver Osborne all competed. At U15 in squads of 6, Florence Thomas-Male, Sofia Shorrock, Bobby Benson and Finlay Marshall took part.

Individual events included Shot, Speed Bounce, Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump, Standing Vertical Jump and 2,4 & 6 Lap Races. There were also 4 x 1 & 4 x 2 Lap Relay Races.

Athletes were selected to compete in up to 3 individual events and a relay. RSCAC youngsters helped Birmingham girls U13 & U15 teams to a 1st place finish and U13 & U15 boys to second place finishes.

Evie, Florence Kinson and Finlay picked up an individual silver medal apiece and Florence Thomas-Male won a gold. Evie won a gold in the paarlauf relay. Florence Kinson, Isabel, Finley and Bobby won golds in 4×2 lap relay. Isabel also won a gold in 4×1 lap relay.

Special Mention must go to Sofia who with 1 gold and 2 bronze individual medals and a gold medal in the 4 x 2 Lap Relay (in a team which included Florence Thomas-Male) received the Champion All Rounder award.

The successful Birmingham girls’ teams now go on to compete in the Sportshall UK Final in Stoke on 1st April and we wish them well.

Earlier in the day, the U11 girls’ and boys’ teams competed in a Fun In Athletics event. 3 girls from RSCAC were selected: Angelina, Jessica S and Mabel. They had great fun running, jumping and throwing and helped Team Birmingham to a second place finish (both the U11 girls’ and boys’ teams finished second).
