ERRA National Road Relays – 8 March

There were good team results at the National Road Relays in Sutton Park on Saturday, which confirmed the improvement all-round for the club at the Road relays in recent years.
Compared to the Midlands Relays, conditions were not optimal for the runners, very sunny with warm temperature over 20 degrees Celsius, but great for spectators.

The women’s team finished in 30th position out of 46 finishing teams.
Katie Ingle ran the fastest short leg for the club (14th Fastest SL overall) in 18:16; whilst Georgia Curry ran the fastest long leg in 33:04. There were also excellent runs from Rachel Thebridge, Melissa Woodward, Helen Elsoueidi and Emily Campion.
Results here.

The men’s team finished in 51st position out of 63 finishing teams, its 2nd best finish in the last 5 years.

A few words from the Senior Men’s team manager Steve Marklew
“Can I take this opportunity to thank ALL runners who competed in the Midland & / or the National events, particularly those who came in at short notice to cover withdrawals or were willing to swap leg times / from short to long legs etc.  Such willingness makes the life of team manager slightly easier when having to change things around.”

Well done to everyone who competed, all runners are grateful for our supporters to the tune of “Come On Sutton” around the local course.

Muninder smashes world record

Muninder in ActionOn a warm and Sunny Sunday Afternoon at Yeovil, Royal Sutton Coldfield athlete Muninder Singh Hayer set a new world record for the RRI Race Running 200 metres. His time was 55.10 seconds and this completely outclassed the previous World Record of 57.23 seconds. In addition he also set a new PB for 400 metres and seasons bests for 100 metres and Seated Club Throw F31. Muninder and Coach Graham Felton were both expecting that he would break the World Record this season, but not this early in the season and not by such a big margin. Training has been going well and everything is now geared towards the Race Running World Championships in Denmark in July which promises to be a great competition. Muninder will be competing over 60, 100, 200 and 400 metres at the Championships. 800 metres is his next challenge and he will be making his debut over this distance in York on the 27th May.

XC Catch up – Senior Men’s and Women’s Leagues (11 Feb)

rscac-womens-tema-feb-2016For the first time this season, the men and women competed at the same venue in the season ending fixtures of their respective cross country leagues as they raced at Warwick University, Coventry on what was a damp and miserable day.

Racing first on a fast but muddy course the women’s team did themselves proud finishing 3rd on the day out of 26 teams competing. Finishing 1st for Sutton and 3rd overall Georgia Curry ran a superb race following Katie Ingle on the 1st lap and then moving coming through to beat her team mate by 4 seconds, a reversal of the previous league race.

Andrea Deathridge again competed strongly finishing 15th with Georgia Delaney having her best race of the season finishing 60th and scoring for the team for the 1st time. Emily Campion, Rachel Thebridge and Helen Elsoueidi ran strongly and completed the team.

At the season ended with Sutton finishing in 8th place overall out of 26 teams and without the early season injuries and illness could have easily finished in the top 3.

The men’s race followed, on a course that had been cut up by the earlier women’s race. Lying in 11th place at the start of the day, Sutton were fighting hard to ensure their First division survival with the bottom three of 16 teams facing relegation. Another excellent run by Shaun Evans, coming home in 7th place led the team to a respectable 10th place on the day with strong supporting runs from Ollie Harradence, Joe Spruce, Alex Blackham, Tom Chew and Simon Corker. This gave Sutton a final league position of 11th place ensuring top flight competition again next season.

Over the campaign, scorers for the first team have come from 10 different athletes reflecting the strength in depth within the squad with both Blackham and Corker scored for the first time this season, while Evans, Harradence and Chew scored in all 4 races.

The B team finished in 12th place in the second string competition with Rob Andrew, Mark Rickards, Fred Tremblay, Trevor Lewis, Paul Jenkins and Matt Stenson scoring while Matt Powel provided great competition for the final place finishing one place behind Stenson in sprint for the finish.

On an individual front, Shaun Evans finished the season in 6th place over all in the senior men’s competition and 2nd place in the junior men’s competition for athletes still under 20. Well done to Shaun and the club as a whole.
