There is no jumps, hurdles and sprints tonight at the Alexander Stadium so we are all fresh for tomorrow’s final Sportshall of the year. Next week, provided it isn’t snowing, we will be back outside at Wyndley. 5.30 – 7pm.
Midlands Counties Athletics Association open meeting
The 2nd Midlands Counties Athletics Association open meeting saw some fine runs and PBs galore for the sprint squad. For Tyrique Grant Fagan and James Griffiths, both u 13 boys this was their major indoor competition. In the first round, the boys ran together and came 1st and 2n respectively in heat 2 of the 60 m sprint. Tyrique's time saw him placed in heat 1 of the second round and James in heat 2. Both boys improved on their first round times, achieving 9 seconds and 9.16 respectively. Fantastic runs from both boys and I am sure there is more to come. Cameron Harris (u 17 men 7.82 seconds) and Rachel Iliffe (u 20 women 8.54 seconds) both set new PBs. Kane Howitt (u 23 men) recorded a time of 7.19 seconds, a new PB and Nick Pryce 7.08 seconds in their first 60 m run of the season. A surprise was in store when Cameron and Rachel unexpectedly met Mo Farah making a flying visit to Birmingham. They both managed a signed photograph and Cameron a photo with the man himself. In case you are wondering, it is Cameron in the foreground!

Sprint Group News – Midland Counties Athletic Association 1st Open Meeting
The first meeting of the year for the sprint squad took place on Saturday 16th January at the Indoor Performance Centre, Alexander Stadium. With 60 metres the only sprint available, the pressure was on and the 3 athletes who took part performed well. Ethan Brough was pitched against the best sprinters in the Midlands and equaled his PB of 7.6 seconds. For both Rachel Iliffe and Cameron Harris, it was their first time running this distance and both moved up an age group to u 20 and u 17 respectively. Rachel ran a respectable 8.63 seconds, with only a small improvement to 8.5 seconds needed for a ranking on the Power of Ten. Similarly, Cameron achieved 7.89 seconds with 7.7 seconds needed for a ranking. Unfortunately, Mollie Darrock had to pull out at the last minute due to injury.
Xmas training for sprints squad

Telford Games more results
Finally, the results from the Telford Games. Some excellent performances from Royal Sutton athletes on what started as a wet and windy day, making conditions difficult for the younger athletes in particular. As is normally the case with this competition, standards were very high.
For the u 11 girls, Caitlin Ralph achieved a silver medal in both the 60 metres and Long Jump and 4th position in the 150 metres. An excellent performance in what was Caitlin’s second track competition. Zara Buchanan won a bronze medal in the Long Jump with a new PB and was 6th in the 60 metre final.
In the u 17 men’s 100 metres both Ethan Brough and Cameron Kirkbride got through to the final, with Ethan running a new PB, in what proved to be a tough race. Both also ran well in the 200 m final.
In the u 15 boys 100 m, Cameron Harris ran well but just missed out on a place in the final. Cameron also performed well in the 200 m final. In addition to the achievements already outlined in a previous report, Ryan Humphreys also achieved a new PB in the 80 m hurdles.
Connor Race, Evan Pritchard and David Iliffe battled it out in the u 13 boys 100m, with Connor achieving a PB in both the heats and the final. Evan and Connor also ran in the 200 m, with Connor again achieving a new PB and a place in the final. Both David and Evan performed well in the Long Jump.
Rachel Iliffe won a bronze medal with a new PB in the u 17 women’s triple jump and ran a new PB in the 100 metres final. Rachel also ran well in the 200 m. Hannah Smith set a new PB in the same race.
Jenny Hopkinson ran well in both the u 15 girls 100 and 200 metres, reaching the final in both events. Madeleine Shay set a new PB in the 100 m.
Freya Liddington won bronze in u 13 girls Long Jump and set a new PB in the final of the 100 m.
Elsa Buchanan just missed out on a medal in the 800 m and Long Jump, achieving 4th place in both events.
