Royal Sutton Coldfield’s girls had great success at the West Midland Schools’ Cross-country Championships at Warley Woods last Saturday 18th January.
Six of them are now guaranteed selection for the National English Schools’ Cross-Country Championships next March in Liverpool.
The most impressive performance came from Lucy Carey in the Inter Girls’ race who led the field for most of the 3200 metre course winning by a massive margin of 150 metres ahead of the 2nd placed athlete. A good performance also from Elsa Buchanan who finished 6th and is guaranteed selection for English Schools’. Good support from Matilda Strachan (10th), Zara Buchanan (12th) and Megan Lozneanu who was 19th.
The only Sutton athlete in the Senior Girls’ race was Emma Cavendish-Tribe who gained selection for English Schools’ by finishing 6th.
In the Junior Girls’ race three of the top six were Sutton athletes; all of them gaining selection for English Schools. They were Charlotte Prince (3rd), Bethan Homer (4th) and Martha Wood (6th). Francesca Allen finished a strong 7th and has a reasonable chance of being selected too. The other places were Emily Symes (10th), Olivia Allen (13th), Evie Sandland (14th) and Lucy Rigby (18th).
Notable performances in the Minor Girls’ race came from Connie Bevan (7th), Phoebe Allen (8th), Lizzie Fox-Payne (10th), Eva Cartwright (11th) and Emily Lloyd (22nd).
The boys’ results were also impressive:
Inter boys: Ethan Patel 10th George O’Connor 12th
Junior boys: Ethan Cook 6th [English Schools qualifier] Isaac
Cartwright 14th
Minor boys: Archie Strachan 15th Ben Harris 24th Luke Horton 23r
6 girls and 1 boy are guaranteed selection for the National English
Schools’ Championships at Liverpool in March.
