Young Athletes League – 17 June

Well done to all our young athletes who put in some outstanding performances at Wyndley last Sunday in the final YAL match.  The team dominated, winning by almost 250 points – this ensures we won the league and qualified for the promotion play off.  A full article is included in this weeks Observer.

Marc Kirsten took some great photos of the meeting.  If you are a club member and would like a link to the photos please email rscacphotos@yahoo.com.

Shugborough Relays – 21 June

The Shugborough Relays were held on Wednesday on the lovely Shugborough Estate.  Royal Sutton again excelled running 7 teams – 1 more than last year, with everybody saying that they will be back again next year.  We ran

  • 1 Ladies Vets 160 team
  • 2 Mixed Vets 160 team
  • 1 Mens Vets 160 Team
  • 2 Mens Vets 200 teams
  • 1 Mens Vets 240 teams

All teams excelled with the mixed vets team of Colin McAuley, Val Carter, Andrea Deathridge, and Russell Simpson winning their race in a time of 47 min 23 secs.  This put them 11 seconds in front of the second placed team. Colin and Andrea were our fastest male and female runners, with Colin  running 11min 05 sec and Andrea 11min 58 sec.  The Vets 240 team missed out on 1st place by 57 secs so must try harder next year!

It was pleasing to see runners who had not run in the relays before turning out for us and enjoying the great atmosphere – in particular those from Bunny’s training group.

Full results can be found here.  Photos available on Bryan Dale’s site here.

Midland Veterans T&F League – 30 May

A hardy bunch of 5 athletes made the trek to Stoke arriving at almost the same time as the Olympic flame just around the corner.  It must have inspired our athletes as they all put in excellent performances with two new club records being set.
David Price (who had to travel approx 150 miles to get to Stoke) set a new M70 record with the 600grams javelin of 32.09m breaking Tom Wyers distance of 23.17 set in 2004.  Fleur O’Brien (in her first race over this distance for quite a few years) set a W60 record in the 800m of 3.29.4.  Graham Felton won the M60 200m and then dropped down a few age groups to take third places in the M35 shot and the M50 discus.  Sandra McDonald won both her W50 events the 200m and Long Jump.  Maureen Lewington won the W60 javelin and then stepped down several age groups to take third place in the W40 discus.
Well done to all of you.  The next meeting is at Burton on Wednesday 27 June so lets have a big turnout for this meeting.  Results are available here:

Nicholas Pryce’s 100m time is also a new club record, taking over James Simmons record set in 1989.  A video of the run is available on our FLICKR page here.

The 4x400m relays were another highlight with the women winning by the length of the home straight and the men also having a great victory.  Nicholas Pryces’s 400m split was recorded by Ruth Dobbins to be 47.1 (WOW!).
Well done to Kane Howitt, Alister Breuns, Andrea Deathridge, Clive Hackforth, Marcus Smedley, Tony Hinchley, Nicholas Mbewe, Madeleine Stearn, Natassja Longstaff, Miranda Stoddart and Charlotte Last who all performed exceptionally on their first appearances for the senior athletics team.

Thanks also to the many people who helped out behind the scenes to make it such a successful event (some who were helping to set up from 8am).

The next meeting is on 1 July at Burton.  Let’s have a great turnout and see if we can get another team victory!
