Refresh and Repair

Undetered by the not so great weather, a number of members plus families and a dog, turned out on Saturday to help prepare hurdles for the coming season. We learnt about hurdle weights and how they can be very hard to move, but with the help of a bit of greese free lube (who knew you could even get such stuff) and some great leg exercises we got them sliding back and forth with ease. The rain put a hold on repainting the club house and so that’ll be another adventure later in the year, when the sun has the upper hand over the clouds.

Thank you to all who turned out.

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Gordon Chapman

The Club regret to announce the death of Gordon Chapman, who was a loyal and active member of Royal Sutton Coldfield Athletics Club both as a competitor and latterly as a Club Coach. He and his wife Beryl, who had recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary were long standing members and competed in race walking events gaining valuable points for their club, particularly in the mid week Vets Track and Field League. He was extremely competitive and rumoured to have a stop watch in his pocket, whether competing or walking to the shops.

On competition days the Chapmans were always down at the club, with Gordon down on the track working whilst Beryl could be found in the club kitchen preparing food for all the officials.

Prior to turning his attention to athletics, Gordon was a keen cyclist for Birchfield Cycle Club and would think nothing of riding for 60 miles on any one day. He maintained his interest in the sport of cycling by watching the televised Tour de France, Giro d’ Italia or the Spanish Vuelta every year.

Words like ‘enthusiastic athlete’, ‘valuable club member’, have been used to describe Gordon during his association with the Club.

During his competitive years at the club he held a total of 9 club records – some achievement!

He will be sadly missed.
