Nadine Okyere selected for World Indoor Championships

Congratulations to Nadine Okyere who has been selected for the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul in March. Nadine, who runs for Birchfield, is a member of Joe Caines successful training group. Her selection follows some fantastic performances at the UK Trials and the Aviva Grand Prix. Details of the team are available here.

EVAC and VAC Championships – 19 February

Donald Brown put in some great performances at the EVAC and VAC Championships (including unofficial BMAF Masters’ Championships). His results in the M45 category were as follows:

60m – 7.48 (2nd place)
200m – 24.42 (1st place)
60m hurdles – 8.91 (1st place)

2nd Midland Indoor Open – 19 February

Three runners were in action at the 2nd Midland Indoor Open:

Nicholas Pryce – Senior Men 400m 49.33 (1st place)
Charmaine Riley – Senior Women 60m 8.17 (1st place)
Luke Fleming – U20 Men 400m 52.97 (2nd place and a PB)

West Midlands Young Athletes XC League / 2nd Midland Indoor Open – 19 February

Another busy weekend ahead for the club. Our young athletes are in action competing in the final league race of the season at Perry Park on Sunday. Overall, the team is currently in 4th place, only 77 points behind Halesowen A & CC. A number of individuals and age groups are also in contention for top 3 finishes. There is also indoor athletics taking place at the NIA on Sunday, with the 2nd Midland Indoor Open. Details are available here.

For the armchair athlete there is some top quality athletics on TV. The Birmingham Aviva Grand Prix is being shown live on BBC1 from 1pm. Iplayer coverage now available here.

Nicholas Pryce – 2nd place Senior Mens 200m 21.91 (PB)
Janice Pryce – 4th place Senior Womens TJ 10.31m (New W50 British Record)
Stefan Anderson – 7th place U17 60m 7.45 (PB). Time in 200m Heat 24.05
Nicholas Mbewe – U17 60m heat 7.54 PB (just missing the final). 200m heat 24.06 (Indoor PB)
Charmaine Riley - 5th place Senior Womens 60m 8.07 (PB)
Georgia Dodd - U17 60m 8.75 (PB)

Scottish Masters Championships (Kelvin Hall)

Donald Brown M45 – 1st 60m 7.54; 1st 200m 24.59; 1st 60mH 9.04
Sandra McDonald W50 - 1st 60m 9.04; 1st 200m 30.52

In addition, Nadine Okyere, who trains with Joe Caines group, took second place in the World Indoor Championships Trials in Sheffield in the 400m. Her time was inside the qualifying time to go to the World Champs. Channel 4 coverage is available here – Nadine’s is the 1st event.

Wyre Forest 8 – 12 February

Pete Parker continued his good form as 1st M55 finisher in the Wyre Forest 8 in a time of 54.08. Other Sutton runners competing were Ali Evetts, Stephen Sutton, Sarah Smewin and Bunny Kyd. Results are available here.

Birmingham XC League Division 1 – 11 February

We’re staying up!!! A fantastic performance by the whole team meant we climbed out of the relegation zone on an exciting final day of racing at Cheltenham.

We scored 462 points on the day (over 100 points better than in any of the previous races) , with our six counters all finishing in the top 100. That meant we finished 13th on the day and 13th in the league (above OWLs, Warwick Uni and Cannock & Staffs). The B team finished a brilliant 3rd on the day and 7th in the league.

Tickets for the 2012 Aviva Series will be going on pre-sale on 18 February. The dates of events are as follows:

2012 Trials - Alexander Stadium (22nd – 24th June)
London Grand Prix – Crystal Palace (13th – 14th July)
Birmingham Grand Prix – Alexander Stadium (26th August)
